Is nuclear waste an unsolvable problem for America and for the world, or is it just politics? Hint: It's not just politics.
Prasad Nair is a senior nuclear waste disposal "expert" at the Department of Energy. He was invited to present a proposal for joint cooperation of government, the nuclear industry, AND the "anti-nuclear" movement to "solve the waste problem."
The presentation was made to about two dozen activists who comprised the "advisory council" for a local environmental organization, and included myself. (I have since resigned from the advisory council.)
None of the well-educated council members at the meeting -- seasoned experts with PhDs, medical degrees, law degrees, engineering degrees, etc., as well as myself, had any idea that time would be given to this so-called "expert." He presented himself as having already solved the nuclear waste problem many times over (at least in his head).
After making a beginner's-level 20-minute presentation where he must have used some form of the phrase "proven safe" a dozen times to describe nuclear waste, nuclear waste storage, and nuclear waste transport, we were presented with a "white paper" that the organization hosting the meeting had apparently commissioned Prasad Nair to write.
Many of those present were disgusted, not only by Nair's presentation, but by having his presentation sprung on us without warning.
It was a complete waste of time, so I sat down and argued each point in Nair's paper. My first thougts, shown in green, were sent to the organization the next day, and then followed later that day with the purple text added, as well as the images, (the next day, August 29, 2025, I fixed a couple of typos in my "green and purple" version, and that version is linked to below).
What happened next was that I was asked not to post it, and that they would review the council's concerns. After a week or two went by, I heard some scuttlebutt that the organization's director had not actually read Nair's original white paper.
Over a month more went by, but yesterday I learned that the organization has rejected the white paper and will not be publishing it. Good!
But the arguments against Nair's white paper should be answered by Nair himself if he's half the expert he claims to be. Of course he was "cc'd" a copy of my responses, and OF COURSE he had assured everyone in the meeting that he would respond to ANY questions. (If he ever does, I'll add his additional comments (with any criticisms or comments I might want to add!) to this post or to a link from this post.)
