Things are really bad, folks... seasoned activists are crying...

Dear Readers,

I'm aghast. Frightened. Shaking. This is the worst day of my life.

Helen Caldicott said on the radio earlier tonight: "This could be much worse than Chernobyl."

Chernobyl killed about a million people.

And this could be worse?!?

This figure, a million people, is denied by the nuclear industry, but was the conclusion after researchers assessed over five thousand individual studies. The final report was translated into English last year, and published in the United States by the New York Academy of Sciences.

[Note: (2025: THE NYAC later retracted the report (shown on right). However, the authors were highly qualified scientist,s and this writer reviewed a pre-publication copy of the book. Although there were numerous typos and calculation errors, the impact of the data was overwhelming. Ace]

That's fifty times greater than the common figure for the next-worst industrial disaster in history -- Bhopal, India. And four times worse than the worst "natural" disaster in history, the Indonesia tsunami of 2004.

Which, thankfully, didn't severely damage any nuclear power plants, although one reactor site thousands of miles from the epicenter was closed for many months afterwards.

Not one thing that is happening in Japan right now comes as a surprise to knowledgeable so-called "anti-nuclear activists" around the world. We saw it coming decades ago. We really did. No one should deny us that.

Not one step in the horror that is unfolding went unpredicted.

We even presented decades-old historic documents proving our case, such as CARTOONS showing the worries about airplane impacts. And worries about earthquakes. And tsunamis. We kept saying something like this was inevitable. Containments would be breached. Radiation would be released. Deaths will occur globally forever.

THIS WAS UNTHINKABLE. But we thought it out.

It will happen again. That's the really unthinkable part.

Even as this horror unfurls, the bravado of the employees at America's nuclear power plants is unimaginable. Moments ago, a reporter in a live broadcast said the nuclear industry would have lot of new data to figure out what to do next, to keep things safe!

But instead, they'll deny that even a 7.1 earthquake can happen here. And only a "tiny" tsunami...

San Onofre, in Southern California (and downwind from Fukushima-Daiichi) is only built to a 7.0 earthquake standard. It is right near the Pacific Ocean, only "protected" by a 25-foot sea wall. That wouldn't have resisted these waves, or the Indonesian waves of 2004.

ACTUAL tsunami waves washing over San Onofre (and Diablo Canyon) might be HUNDREDS of feet high because nearby underwater canyons can create skyscraper-high waves of water.

Scare tactics? I'm so tired of being accused of scare tactics! The public has a right to know that their participation in opposing nuclear power is required to get these awful nuclear power plants shut down forever -- which HAS to happen, or else THIS will keep happening.

The media also needs to have a better understanding of what's happening. But how can anyone be asked to understand what is going on, when even the experts don't know what is happening inside the containment buildings, let alone inside the reactors pressure vessels themselves? They know that pumping more water into them helps. But even that is very hard to do. And isn't good for the water.

Telling the truth about what's happening right now isn't a scare tactic. Even more than a hundred miles from the site of the accident, the U.S. Navy was getting so irradiated (the equivalent of an entire month's "normal" radiation exposure per hour, we're told) that they lumbered out of the area as fast as their TWO NUCLEAR REACTORS ON BOARD COULD CARRY THEM.

Lucky they didn't blow a gasket in their rush to save themselves.

Three -- now I hear four -- nuclear reactors at Fukushima-Daiichi have suffered explosions. This is unprecedented. And workers are being pulled away... it will get even worse if no one mans the pumps! (See below).

The nuclear industry calls this a great surprise, unpredictable. We'll just build to higher standards, they say, as they continue to run there old reactors despite the dangers.

But we predicted it! We even predicted cascading nuclear accidents!

Harvey Wasserman, like Helen Caldicott a distinguished critic of nuclear power, whose comments have fallen on deaf ears for years ... sounded like he was crying, as I have been, on the interview today. Things are really, really bad.

This is a silent genocide. The deaths will occur for decades, centuries, and millennia to come.

If the winds blow the poisons here, as they typically do, our children will be the first to suffer. Our infants, our fetuses... our pregnant young mothers. No racial or religious group did this to us, industrial arrogance brings these ill winds. We are in for a dousing. A black rain. Parts of Japan may be getting radioactive soot rain-outs, called fallout, right now. And Korea, China, etc... And this isn't even as bad as it can get.

The spent fuel pools: One of them is draining itself. They can't seem to prevent it. Several reactor pressure vessels might suffer a steam explosion at any moment. If the pools empty, then inevitably the fuel will soon catch fire and burn.

This is awful. Thanks, Toshiba. Thanks, Hitachi. Thanks, General Electric. Thanks, nuclear industry.

THIS event, as bad as it is and as bad as it might become, is fair warning for what might happen at every other nuclear site around the world. NO NEW NUKES! is not nearly enough. NO NUKES! Scrap the old ones.

It's now well past too late. We don't need to wait 20 years for a new set of studies of the health effects.

Everywhere along the coast where the tsunami struck, people will be moving back and rebuilding their homes. But around Fukushima-Daiichi, they won't be moving back in our lifetime. And the exclusion zone was just expanded again, and probably will be again. Or should be.

Actions have always spoken louder than words. Acts of God, acts of Mother Nature, have always trumped arrogance. Acts of arrogance should be followed by acts of contrition. But if you expect the nuclear industry to fold, don't hold your breath.

Dear Readers,

Today's news is worse than yesterday's, which was worse than the day before. Now THREE reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Power Facility (or perhaps I should say, former nuclear power facility) are permanently disabled -- damaged by the introduction of boric acid and sea water in a desperate measure to prevent a full-scale disaster. It might work yet... it might not. This "hail mary" approach has to work perfectly three times... seaweed clogging the pipes could spell doom...

The reactor cores are apparently already in some state of partial meltdown. The exact conditions inside the reactor pressure vessels are unknown. The three reactors that are in trouble are, not coincidentally, the three that were operating at the time the earthquake struck. They automatically shut down, but all the backup generators failed when the tsunami struck an hour later

Unpredictable? Not at all!

Read my own blogs, or read any of a thousand other activists who have been warning about these sorts of problems for YEARS!

Yet, even recently, at San Onofre in California, the backup generators have failed to start in scheduled TESTS because required maintenance had not been not performed. How will they perform in an emergency?

California's four operating nuclear reactors are Pressurized Water Reactors. The reactors at Fukushima are all Boiling Water Reactors. The differences are not particularly important at the moment: Both types are dangerous. Both need to be eliminated from the earth. There is no type of reactor which is safe from catastrophic fuel melting, burning, vaporizing, or otherwise escaping into the environment.

If you didn't believe it before, remember that THIS basic reactor design is more than 50 years old. Tried and true? So they said. For half a century we've been told that nothing like this could possibly happen anywhere: A cascade of nuclear reactor accidents.

Now we're being told that we're in "uncharted territory" and nobody knows what to do... the nuclear industry admits there are lessons to be learned from this. Yes, there is one lesson. It's this: SHUT 'EM DOWN NOW. All of them forever.

We're not out of the woods, by any means. We're not even out of the demolition derby!

Dear Readers,

The explosion at the Fukushima MOX plant (unit 3) looks far worse than the explosion yesterday at Fukushima Unit 1, which destroyed the top part of the reactor building.

They are assuming it was a hydrogen gas explosion, but what happened to the spent fuel pool there? These buildings are huge, these are huge explosions. This is awful.

White clouds were coming up from Unit 1 again today, which shouldn't be happening if it's under control. So it's not under control. Unit 2 apparently isn't under control, either. Having huge explosions on either side can't make things easier. Other reactors in Japan are also in trouble.

And the New York Times is saying that radioactive releases could continue for MONTHS.

May I respectfully take this moment to ask San Onofre and Diablo Canyon to shut down forever? What kind of warning do those guys want, anyway? Acts of God aren't good enough? Man's folly exposed says nothing?

The nuclear industry has been telling us for nearly 25 years that nothing as bad as Chernobyl (ONE MILLION DEAD) could EVER happen again. By the time it's over, THIS could be MUCH, MUCH WORSE.

In 2010, according to TEPCO, the operator of the site, there were already more than 10,000 spent fuel assemblies located at the Fukushima-Daiichi complex, mostly in spent fuel pools.

After Chernobyl the nuclear industry ignored cancer clusters, deformities, heart problems, and thus, undercounted the death toll a thousand different ways. But a compendium of thousands of studies, published by the New York Academy of Sciences, put the number at close to a million.

After Hiroshima / Nagasaki and all the atomic bomb testing, health effects were carefully and deliberately downplayed, too. Determining which new cancers have been caused by Fukushima won't be easy EVEN IF a million people die in and around Japan, and another million die around the rest of the planet. The winds and waters move these poisons around very quickly.

There is no way to know how much radiation is being released, or how much will reach the United States. It should be noted, however, that the Japanese military used free-floating balloons to try to bomb America during World War Two. Nearly ten thousand were launched and over a thousand bomb-balloons reportedly got through.

That's the way the winds go.

There's spent fuel in numerous locations around these reactors, including huge pools with four-foot thick concrete walls -- located ABOVE the reactors in these models. These pools need nearly constant water supplies.

Fuel in dry casks, also located at the site, have a few feet of concrete and a few inches of steel protecting them. That's not nearly good enough. In an accident, the dry casks can't simply be doused in water even if you could get near enough to throw the water on them.

The United States wants to build Yucca Mountain because dry casks aren't really a very safe or practical solution. But Yucca Mountain, planned for a seismically active area, isn't a good solution, either. So they just endlessly debate the matter and keep the plants running (and try to build new ones).

Right now, the entire core of any of these stricken reactors in Japan could be turned to rubble in an instant -- pulverized or "rubbleized". This is not a "nuclear explosion," which is not possible, but it would be very, very bad. The resulting reactor vessel steam explosion could, for example, blow the 20,000 pound top of the reactor pressure vessel half a mile high. All four [correction: six, but it is believed only three had fuel in them, so corrected to three] reactors at Fukushima could explode in sequence: Bing bing bing bing, one after another. But that wouldn't even be the worst of it. All that spent fuel is in danger, too.

We're not out of the wood, by any means. We're not even out of the demolition derby.

Meltdowns and false assurances...

If you think things are getting better in Japan, find another news source...

"We're still expecting to see another 7 to 8 earthquake..." -- expert interviewed by the BBC just now. He stated that at least one aftershock is usually within a digit of the main quake, although this main quake was the fifth largest ever recorded, so historic data are rare. Anything could happen.

So every nuclear reactor in Japan that isn't in dire trouble already, might be at any moment. A least three nuclear reactors in Japan have been ruined permanently, two of which have had "partial" fuel melts, many are releasing unmeasured volumes of radiation into the air and water, and the nuclear industry just watches and assures us they are "clean and green" and -- oh look, those highly skilled workers (who don't know when to call in the bucket brigade) may have managed to prevent a catastrophic explosion / meltdown!

(Note: That explosion yesterday at Fukushima 1 was NOT the reactor pressure vessel exploding, which may yet happen and if it does, that could start spent fuel pool fires and additional meltdowns of nearby reactors.)

There have been more than 200 earthquakes of 5.0 or greater in the area recently, and more than 20 above 6.0. "NO one can predict earthquakes" added the expert.

Below are some recent communications from the BBC, followed by a comment in the New York Times by former NRC commissioner Nils Diaz, an apologist for the nuclear industry. Nils Diaz is wrong to think that if this had happened here, the meltdowns that have apparently occurred would not have occurred. He claims that American power plant operators would have acted more quickly. Dumping sea water or boric acid into a reactor ruins the reactor, and there is no reason to think we wouldn't have also waited too long. In fact, the evidence suggests otherwise. For example, here in America, the Monticello nuclear reactor was found to have an inoperable Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) after operating for 30 years. Shipping bolts had been left on the baffles, and no one noticed. Had it been needed (as the ECCS was at multiple reactors in Japan), it wouldn't have been available.

So what did AMERICAN reactor operators do? Remove the bolts? Yep. Shut the reactor down until the bolts were removed? Nope.

They waited 12 hours before shutting down the reactor, because regulations said they COULD wait that long if they wanted to. The operators might have thought they could fix the ECCS in that amount of time, though it's unlikely. By the 11th hour they surely knew they weren't going to complete the task in time, BUT THEY KEPT THE REACTOR GOING.

Because an operating reactor makes money for its owners. And the regulators said they could. It's a good thing they didn't have an earthquake during those 12 hours, or a tornado or other natural disaster. Good thing nobody flipped the wrong switch and they actually needed the ECCS.

Subsequent investigations of the Fukushima ongoing disaster -- perhaps after the involved personnel have died of their radiation exposures -- might blame faulty equipment, confusing signals, or any number of things that would trip up a U.S. operator too. Nils Diaz's comments are nearly racist, actually.

And just plain wrong. It can happen here today too, tomorrow, or any time. And American nuclear operators are just as bull-headed about keeping the plants online "come hell or high water" as everyone else. These were, after all, American nuclear reactors, built by American firms. Undoubtedly American "experts" were immediately called upon to assist or advise the Japanese operators.

What's happening in Japan can happen here, too.

1721: More on the Tokai nuclear power plant: A report submitted to the Ibaraki prefectural government by the Japan Atomic Power Company said that one of the two pumps being used to cool the water of a suppression pool for the plant's nuclear reactor had stopped working, according to the Kyodo news agency. However, the other pump was still working and there was no problem with cooling the reactor, the prefectural government said. All control rods were set in completely at the reactor, it added.

1710: The crisis has renewed concern in other countries about the safety of atomic power. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said it represented a turning point for the world. She said that safety standards at her own country's nuclear power stations would now be reviewed. In the United States, Senator Joe Lieberman said Washington needed to put the brakes on the development of nuclear power plants until lessons were learned from what had happened in Japan.

1706: The news about Tokai comes as the authorities battle to prevent a meltdown at the stricken Fukushima-Daiichi complex. Sea water is being pumped into three overheating reactors there. The plant was rocked by an explosion on Saturday, which blew off the roof of one reactor building. Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared at a second nuclear site. The International Atomic Energy Agency said increased levels of radiation had been detected at Onagawa, close to the area worst hit by the tsunami.

In the case of Saturday's blast, experts said that problem was avoidable.

Mr. Diaz said that a comprehensive nuclear power plant safety program developed in the United States after the Sept. 11 attacks would have prevented a similar accident at any of the nation's nuclear facilities.

The massive explosion following a cooling problem at one Fukushima's nuclear reactors, Daiichi, has not only released radiation and other toxic compounds, but has created an untenable situation for workers at Fukushima's other nuclear reactors nearby, called Daini, especially given that a state of emergency has been declared for five reactors at the two plants. Latest news is that a hydrogen explosion is now possible at the No. 3 reactor at Fukushima 1.

"Workers are being exposed to the 'allowable' annual dose of radiation every hour that they remain on site. Our hearts go out to them," said Muna Lakhani, co-ordinator of Earthlife Africa's Unplug Nuclear 1 campaign. The danger is not over. There are fears of another explosion as the cooling system at a second reactor has also failed, as of Sunday morning. "The measuring of Caesium at the plant indicates that a meltdown has indeed taken place, which raises the levels of radiation released to catastrophic proportions" suggested Lakhani. Latest news on Sunday confirms fears of a multiple meltdown.

The reactors have all been shut down. The reactor core remains hot for days after shutdown, however, so workers have been busy ensuring that the fuel rods do not melt down. For this the cooling systems need to be operational requiring a power source. The quake has disrupted the backup supplies of power including diesel generators. The IAEA supplied batteries and coolant in the interim. They are now flushing the highly radioactive core with seawater which will cause massive seawater contamination whilst preventing a full scale Chernobyl type meltdown. This is an act of desperation and unprecedented.

Platitudes by the Japanese government and nuclear industry suggesting that the radiation threat is minimal must be treated with great caution, as reports confirm that not only has the containment been breached, and that 'venting' is taking place, but also that radiation levels at about 1000 higher than normal have been measured. The 24 hr monitoring that is supposed to happen as a matter of course, has been shutdown (www/nu/pamp/index-j.html) ­ Japanese activists suggest that this is so that the public and the world at large will not be told how much radiation has and is being released" said Gray Maguire, ELA branch secretary.

It took local activists many hours to get the exclusion zone expanded from the initial 10km to 20 km, which, while not completely safe, helps limit harm to local residents.

"We call upon the nuclear industry, and the South African government, to take this disaster seriously, and abandon all nuclear plans for our country. Given that proposed sites are all along the coast, we believe that this gamble is unacceptable. Not only are sustainable and safe alternatives cheaper than nuclear power, but they are also better solutions to the creation of decent work and energy security, as well as the best solutions to limit climate change," Lakhani states. The public should note that our existing nuclear power plant Koeberg is on a geological fault on the Cape Fold Belt with the last destructive large earthquake occurring in 1809. Interesting also is that if we were to apply the 20km exclusion/ evacuation zone (which has been applied to Fukushima) to Koeberg this would mean evacuating most of Cape Town.

South Africa is considering a 'fleet' of nuclear reactors, at Thyspunt, Bantamklip and additional reactors at Koeberg, at a potential cost of hundreds of billions of Rands. Yje National Nuclear Regulator has also come under fire, for not mobilising a "hazmat" team, with local activists questioning their ability to respond to a disaster at Koeberg.

Examples of problems and cover ups:

Local concerns had already been fuelled by revelations, which came to light in 2002 and 2003, that data at the plant had been deliberately falsified to comply with regulations on wastewater discharges into the sea.

In 1999, the seeming lack of controls at nuclear power plants caused widespread alarm when three workers at Tokaimura, in Ibaraki prefecture, suffered high doses of radiation and more than 100 local residents were exposed to low levels of radiation due to a "criticality" event, which is a limited, uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction.

It emerged that Japan Nuclear Fuel Conversion Company (JCO), which operated the plant, had modified its enriched uranium processing procedure, without approval from the authorities and removed various safety measures aimed at ensuring prevention of criticality.

Not long before the Tokaimura accident, on December 8, 1995, a fast-breeder reactor, known as Monju, which uses plutonium fuel instead of uranium, suffered a serious accident, which led to leakage of sodium coolant.

Map a hoax; situation real...

Dear Readers,

See below for a good explanation regarding the fallout map I recently used in a You-Tube video. It was fake. I had received the map from several sources this morning. I apologize for the error.

The question remains: How many Americans might die if the jet stream carries a large plume of radioactive cesium, strontium, and other crud across the oceans and dumps them upon us? Thousands? Tens of thousands? If a full-scale meltdown occurs, millions could die in Japan. At least one partial melting of the fuel rods apparently already has occurred -- possibly two -- and there may be as many as five separate reactors in severe trouble at the moment.

A study published by the New York Academy of Sciences last year reviewed thousands of other studies about Chernobyl, and concluded that the death toll from that accident is in the million-person range. [NOTE: Publication of the Chernobyl book was withdrawn by the NYAS. However, YH&OS had a chance to review it before publication, and although I found numerous typos and calculation errors, in this writer's opinion, it was nevertheless very compelling in its main assertion that the Chernobyl death toll was extremely underestimated. - Ace, 2025]

Tens of billions of Curies of poison might be released in the next few days, and perhaps millions already have been. Untreated sea water is being pumped through at least one reactor, poisoning billions of gallons of water as it cools the reactor.

The danger from nuclear power is very, very real, and the danger to Americans from this incident is very real, too. Fool me once... uh, you know how it goes.... even if George doesn't!

Millions Of Americans Will Not Be Killed By Nuclear Fallout In Two Weeks, It's Just A Fake Map

Australian Radiation Services finds itself inadvertently caught up in a fast spreading online hoax, following the unnerving explosion at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, after yesterday's 8.9 earthquake and 10 metre tsunami.

The Nuclear Fallout Map is fake simply because Australian Radiation Services don't issue such maps. It was likely chosen before ARS offices are closed until Monday, as they are most weekends.

This unsourced and likely dodgy chart (nausia?) is being heavily circulated, on social networking sites, forums and email, along with the fake Nuclear Fallout Map:
0-50 rads - No obvious short-term effects.

80-120 rads - You have a 10% chance of vomiting and experiencing nausia for a few days.

130 -170 rads - You have a 25% chance of vomiting and contracting other symptoms.

180-220 rads - You have a 50% chance of vomiting and having other severe physical effects.

270-330 rads - 20% chance of death in 6 weeks, or you will recover in a few months.

400-500 rads - 50% chance of death

550-750 rads - Nausia within a few hours ; no survivors

The fake map shows a huge nuclear fallout cloud of 750 rads engulfing millions of Americans by March 22. So, if you were a West Coast living American, the fake map and the above numbers might lead you to believe you and all your family and neighbours will be dying within 6 to 10 days.

But there are some interesting things happening on social networking sites and public online forums about that map.

First off, there are thousands of people on Twitter and Facebook shouting down claims this Nuclear Fallout Map is the real deal and pointing out exposure to 750 rads will not "cause nausia within a few hours; no survivors".

Also, discussion pages, linked in Google search to 'Nuclear Fallout Map, claiming the map is very, very real and The Truth Is Being Suppressed By The Media are disappearing or turning up blank. Google also appears to be jigging their search results so searches for the map will expose users to sites pointing out its utter fakeness.

But at the same time, at least a few dozen Twitter spam accounts (fake accounts pumping exact same tweet & link) are busily flogging the Nuclear Fallout Map, also claiming it's very, very real, and the truth is being suppressed, presumably aiming to spread panic in the United States. Most of these fake accounts only became active shortly after the fake Nuclear Fallout Map started circulating online.

It would seem that someone more powerful than a fukwit photoshopping hoaxer and his friends want the Nuclear Fallout Map to be viewed as a horrifying reality.

Who would want to do this? Who benefits?

Of course, attention and discussion focusing on the Nuclear Fallout Map hoax distracts many from the real truth about the Japan earthquakes, and particularly the quakes that seemed to be closing in on the Fukushima plant, and this real truth needs to be immediately revealed.

Here it is:

Al Gore used his earthquake machine to destroy the Fukushima plant and paranoid up the whole world about nuclear energy so everyone turns to alternative energy instead.

You know it, I know, but most importantly, Al Gore knows it. And now he knows you know!

Anyway, James Bond villianish conspiracy theories aside, the real truth about the March 11 Japan earthquake is this is turning out to be the worst, the most deadly, most devastating, in modern Japanese history.

Cities, towns, tens of thousands of people swept away. A disaster now of a scale beyond the imaginations even of Japanese disaster management specialists, the most earthquake paranoid people on the planet, who seem mostly stunned, broken, dazed, at press conferences. Who can blame them. The massive earthquake and horrifically devastating repeat tsunamis are beyond the worst scenarios ever workshopped or modeled, a surreal nightmare has become their reality.

The death toll may climb to over 30,000 within days, and top 100,000 within a few weeks.

At this moment, there are at least 1300 Australians visiting or living in Japan who are unaccounted for. This number is likely to fall as communications are restored.


Scratch two reactors... (or maybe five... or fifty... or five hundred...)

The ongoing crises in Japan should be enough of a warning to shut every nuclear power plant in the world down forever.

It's not just that "everything that can go wrong, did go wrong." The pro-nukers will claim that, and already are. "Backup systems should have worked..."

But really, what did they expect? Four reactors. Eight emergency generators. Each one can power one of several reactors. BUT what happens when all eight are flooded with debris from a tsunami, a perfectly predictable event?

Well, we're seeing what happens.

Several reactors in Japan, possibly as many as five, are in danger of meltdown. Spent fuel pools may already have been damaged, too. At least one worker at the plants has been killed, others injured, and local residents, in the midst of evacuation, are testing positive for radiation exposure. Radioactive steam venting has occurred, hundreds of square miles are being evacuated TOO LATE AS USUAL, and things aren't getting better. An explosion has ripped apart one reactor building.

Here is an animation showing the predicted fallout pattern if ONE reactor melts down. Double it for two. Add much, much more for a spent fuel pool fire. Also included in this animation is the fallout pattern that actually occurred after Chernobyl, but overlaid this time over Southern California, around Diablo Canyon or San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

Let's hope that the boric acid and sea water being poured into the stricken reactors works -- either of which will damage the reactor beyond repair, but they might stop the reaction.

One step closer to Genpatsu-Shinsai... and a million people dead...

Dear Readers,

Talk about a warning! I don't get many calls at 1 am, let alone 3 am, but I got both tonight. I mean this morning.

53 countries -- including mine -- are under threat of tsunami waves. According to the Kyoto News Service, at least 11 nuclear reactors in Japan have automatically shut down.

First it was a 7.2 earthquake two days ago, near Honshu, Japan. Then a 6.0. Then two more 6-range earthquakes, followed by an 8.9 mega-quake about five hours ago -- the largest in Japan's modern history -- that triggered tsunami alerts, warnings, and advisories all around the Pacific. The waves haven't hit our area -- yet.

We're supposed to see waves of "only" a foot or so here in California, in a few hours. But sometimes tsunami waves converge as they hit the coast and are significantly larger than expected. Sometimes they pile up on each other as they hit the shore. I doubt they've shut the San Onofre and Diablo Canyon nuclear reactors down as a precaution... They should do so, of course. Permanently.

Right now, every news service is showing videos of waves pushing large boats into buildings and dragging cars, trucks and even houses -- and presumably people -- out to sea. Fires are raging up and down the coast of Japan.

In a nuclear reactor in Northeastern Japan, something in the turbine room caught fire and is burning as I write this. No radiation leakage anywhere, so far... other than the usual, constant radiation releases from every nuclear reactor, everywhere. (Always called trivial by authorities, even these leaks are not.)

Any large releases might not be announced for days or weeks, if ever. They don't want to cause a panic, of course...

It looks just like what happened during the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami, when perhaps 250,000 people were killed. The death toll is apparently going to be orders of magnitude less.

But if nukes get involved, it could just as easily be orders of magnitude MORE, if the earthquake or the tsunami triggers a meltdown of a nuclear reactor.

The Japanese have a phrase for that: Genpatsu-Shinsai -- a meltdown triggered by an earthquake.

Railroad cars full of explosive chemicals have NOT been reported to have smashed into dry cask storage, as could happen at San Onofre in a tsunami.

Spent fuel pools might be safe at the moment, although there are reports of problems with an "Emergency Core Cooling Unit" and a "nuclear emergency" was reportedly declared at one plant.

Pipes, fittings, valves, control lines -- all have undoubtedly been weakened by the violent shaking.

Every nuclear power plant contains tens of billions of Curies of radiation within them, PLUS their spent fuel pools of used reactor cores which hold billions more Curies of radiation, and in many cases, extremely dangerous "dry casks" of highly radioactive used reactor cores, holding billions more.

Chernobyl is the standard against which all modern disasters are measured: The current estimate is that about a million people died because of Chernobyl. Recently, the French government (of all people...) released an animation of the winds during the first two weeks after Chernobyl's meltdown.

We've overlaid a map of America on top of the French animation. It would hit everywhere.

They just keep on heapin' it on at Oldbury...

Dear Readers,

A UK nuclear power plant, Oldbury Unit 2, is getting a six month license extension (through June 2011) so that it can be shut down the same month as Oldbury Unit 1 is scheduled to shut down -- unless further license extensions are granted: They are also vying for a 2012 closure "in order to use up spare fuel at the site".

What a LOUSY reason to keep a nuclear power plant operating!

Unused nuclear fuel is mathematically about 10 million times safer than so-called "spent" fuel, which is just about the most dangerous and difficult stuff on earth to handle. "Fresh" fuel is not much more dangerous than so-called "depleted" uranium (DU) -- the stuff that soldiers handle "safely" all the time. The main danger from DU occurs when it's been exploded into tiny fragments and vaporized -- at which point it can be inhaled or ingested, and is horrifically poisonous, partially for its heavy metal toxicity characteristics (yecch!), as well as for its radioactivity.

When uranium is in solid form, especially when it's been carefully wrapped in a cladding which has been individually inspected for cracks (at least, it's supposed to have been), it's relatively easy to transport -- about as difficult as transporting DU shells and armor. (Plutonium and MOX-based fuels are not as easy to deal with, but are still MUCH safer before being used in a nuclear reactor.)

A "critical mass" (or "criticality") is achieved in a nuclear power reactor (steadily and predictably, if it operates according to plan -- otherwise it's a "meltdown") or in a nuclear bomb (exponentially more frequently over microseconds of time, if it operates according to plan -- otherwise it's a "dud") by collecting together a large enough "pile" of nuclear fuel. Once the pile is big enough, or when control rods that prohibit the chain reaction are removed, collisions of decay products with the uranium atoms in the pile cause some of the atoms to "fission" (split or cleave) into (usually two) roughly even-sized chunks, releasing a few additional neutrons, as well as gamma rays and other types of energy in the process. The neutrons collide with other uranium atoms, keeping the reaction going.

In a power reactor, a careful balance is maintained to sustain the "chain reaction." Various systems are available to the operators to slow the reaction down by small fractions of the total output if it starts to increase in power/thermal output above the desired level for any reason, or to stop the reaction entirely. It's always assumed (by the nuclear regulators and the nuclear industry) that one of the several backup systems will work properly, which is an iffy assumption at best. Many of the backup systems have never been tested at full size, let alone in the real world. In one case, shipping bolts were left on for thirty years, rendering the "Emergency Core Cooling System" inoperative that entire time. They checked when a different plant realized THEY had left similar bolts on! This would have caused an "out-of-design-basis" accident, had the cooling system not been available when called upon. The unthinkable -- and uninsurable -- would have happened.

Even the most advanced reactor designs have thousands of potential accident and terrorist / war / natural disaster scenarios which could result in a core meltdown and massive release of radioactive fission products to the surrounding environment. The government refuses to study the actual details -- it's just too horrific and would shut the door on nuclear power generation forever if they were to update the 1982 CRAC-2 report. That report was so devastating, it was suppressed, denounced, and ignored by the government regulators who had commissioned it, as well as by the entire nuclear industry. In truth, CRAC-2 didn't go nearly far enough in estimating how bad an accident could be, and also probably underestimated their rate of occurrence. There have been enough close calls (plus Chernobyl in 1986) to assume so. The average reactor is much older now than they were ever expected to become -- 2nd and 3rd 20-year license extensions are granted routinely to any and all types of nuclear power plants, regardless of efficiency. Yet they are ALL already cracking and leaking. They are highly irradiated and embrittled. Catastrophic failures increase in likelihood daily, and many parts can't even be inspected and are not on the blueprints.

Our nuclear infrastructure is ripe for catastrophic failure. And the populations around the plants have grown tremendously.

Normal radioactive decay of uranium (element 92) starts with a sudden, unpredictable release of an alpha particle, which is a very high speed helium atom with no electrons attached. This initial radioactive decay is followed by additional releases of alpha and beta particles, gamma rays, and other energy forms. Natural radioactive decay of uranium does not involve nuclear fission. The end-product of the various natural decay chains, typically 20 or more steps, is usually lead (element 82). Not, say, radioactive Strontium-90, which comes almost exclusively from atomic bombs and nuclear power plants, as does Cesium-137, Iodine-131, and many other radioactive isotopes which are produced from fissioning (splitting) larger elements in a nuclear chain reaction.

These lighter elements -- "fission products" -- are themselves radioactive because they invariably have too many neutrons to be stable. (The "stability curve" of isotopes illustrates this). Fission products decay by releasing a beta particle (a high-speed electron), sometimes accompanied by, or followed by, a gamma ray or an x-ray energy burst. Beta particles are negatively charged and are able to damage things they merely pass close to, especially after they've slowed down from their original speed, which is nearly (>99.7%) the speed of light. At that speed, they pass so fast, they aren't around long enough to do much damage.

It can take a dozen or more radioactive decay steps, and many thousands of years, with each step occurring at some random time (each isotope of every element has an average half-life) before fission products decay into stable elements.

Some fission products are radioactive isotopes of elements that living organisms use as part of their structure. Living organisms cannot distinguish between stable and unstable atoms of the same element until the moment of decay, when there is an enormous (on an atomic scale) energy release inside the body. After a radioactive beta decay occurs, the new element, with one more proton, is no longer going to be useful in the molecule it was a part of inside the living system. For example, after a beta decay, Cesium-137 becomes Barium-137, Strontium-90 becomes Yttrium-90, etc..

As the beta particle is ejected, the rebound of the "new" atom may cause it to be knocked away from its position in a molecule. Not that it would matter: the atom's charge changes too, increasing by one proton's worth of positive charge, and it's now the wrong element anyway. If it was part of a DNA molecule, the DNA chain will be broken. Complex proteins, created with tens of thousands of atoms and hundreds of delicate folds and bends in the structure, are ruined when this happens. Cancers are sometimes begun. One beta particle can destroy tens of thousands of molecules as it passes them.

The amount of fission products in so-called "spent" fuel depends on the amount of energy extracted from the fuel: The more energy released by the fission process, the more fission products there will be. As soon as the fuel is part of a "critical mass" it becomes very highly irradiated. The rest of the time spent in the reactor makes it all the more deadly, and all the more difficult to handle, and "hotter" both thermally and radioactively.

Once the reactor fuel rods are removed from the reactor, the fissioning process stops, but the fission products remain.

So using fresh fuel that's stored on-site is a VERY poor excuse to keep ANY reactor operating for even an extra minute, let alone six months!

Besides, Oldbury Unit II is an inefficient old 217 megawatt reactor that should never have opened in the first place. It was commissioned in 1967.

The operators of the reactor do admit to another reason they would like to keep the reactor operating: To help pay for "decommissioning."

Another lousy reason to keep a nuclear power plant operating!

"Decommissioning" funds don't cover final disposal costs of the spent fuel, which will be phenomenally expensive no matter how you slice it, dice it, encase it, decompose it, chemically treat it, glassify it, solidify it, liquify it, purify it, or dilute it -- unless, of course, you release the spent fuel into the oceans, the air, and the soil, which would be a crime against humanity (and which will probably be done, sooner or later).

It will take hundreds of thousands of human generations before the radioactive isotopes will have all decayed to stable elements, but in just a few generations, or even a few decades, the fuel rods will have crumbled to dust from their own destructive forces, moisture, heat, vibration, and other forces. The dust will have flowed into the water table somewhere, and the water will have been diluted with cleaner water and delivered to millions of people.

But nevertheless, they want to produce more nuclear waste at Oldbury.

And the REAL reason they want to keep Oldbury running is to keep the site license operational. What they're really hoping for is a new, state-funded nuclear reactor or two, to be built at the site. It's the dream of every old nuclear reactor operator in the world. That, and to be loved. They might get the money.

There never will be a safe way to store nuclear waste. I offer as "exhibit A" a pamphlet from more than ten years ago from the United States Department of Energy (DOE), misinforming us that Yucca Mountain, once built, would solve our waste problem after what was then twenty years of "scientific" investigation showing it to be suitable. A decade later, Yucca Mountain is still not suitable, and never will be. It leaks, it shakes, it caves in. It's just not right.

I offer as "exhibit B" the simple logic that anything which produces ionizing radiation (alpha, beta, gamma, x-ray, etc. energy bursts) will, by definition, destroy any container you put that thing in!

England has even fewer options than we in America do for their nuclear waste problem (if less than zero options is possible). No country has a solution, no country ever can -- except perhaps Japan, which seems to have contracted with other countries to take all their nuclear waste for "reprocessing," a procedure which requires transporting the highly carcinogenic waste thousands of miles over the open oceans, treating it physically and chemically, releasing vast quantities of radioactive and otherwise-deadly chemicals into the environment, reusing a small portion of the "quap", and storing the rest of the mess in flimsy containers too close to groundwater supplies SOMEWHERE.

But despite all these problems, an extension for Oldbury was granted.

Ridiculous!

Mr. President: Please don't shove nuclear power down our throats!

Dear Readers,

In the 1990s, I flew from California to Texas to attend a manufacturing convention. I didn't know anyone, but bought a ticket for the opening night's dinner anyway, and sat with eight or nine other attendees from around the world.

The trip out to Texas included a very curious detour. Having slept very poorly the day before traveling, I was sleeping on the plane. I woke up to see what looked for all the world (literally, for as far as the eye could see FROM AN AIRPLANE!) like humongous holes in the ground.

We were flying over the Nevada Test Site.

And I mean, not just a little. We went back and forth. We were in some kind of holding pattern over it. Strange, because it is, after all, closed air space. This was after I had written my essay with the late Pamela Blockey-O'Brien called -- like the U. S. government's book written several decades earlier -- The Effects of Nuclear Weapons.

Crater after crater of varying sizes, each perfectly round around the edges, bowl-shaped, and apparently empty. Some overlapped by various amounts.

The amount of time we spent over the craters can only be explained by doubling back or circling -- a straight line would have lasted maybe 30 minutes in a slow airplane, but this went on much longer than that.

I couldn't believe what I had seen. When I got home I started looking at aerial photographs of every geological formation I could find in the southwestern United States or northwestern Mexico. Of course, nothing looked like THAT! Finally, I saw some actual photos of the NTS, and then of course, it was conclusive. That's where we were. I still don't know why.

At the dinner, someone was telling a story about a foreign nuclear reactor he supplied parts to -- high-quality parts, but not the kind that could be sold for use in a nuclear reactor here in America, because they have to have a lot more paperwork here, to be sure the parts are properly inspected and so on. I read recently that the difference in cost can be $2000 for what is normally a $20 part -- not a trivial amount!

The "foreign" reactor was built by one of "America's" nuclear power manufacturing companies, which in turn is owned by a Japanese nuclear company.

The plant was financed with high-interest foreign "investment" capital. It was selected by local officials who were bribed with briefcases of cash. It was built to specifications no one understood, mostly written in a foreign language. Regulations were modeled loosely after our own Nuclear Regulatory Commission's rules, or even after rules defined by the NRC's predecessor, the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).

Riots, terrorism, extreme poverty, overpopulation, military rule, and natural disasters marked the country's social system.

And now, as the speaker was telling the story, after several lucky decades of operation, the cash-stricken plant had hired the worst foreign workers that the money they still had could buy.

Many of those workers were from America.

The reactor was so poorly run, that the running joke at the plant was that if you left, it was better to put down on your resume that you were a child molester doing time in the state penitentiary, than that you had worked at that plant! It was the one thing that kept people working there -- having to admit that you worked there at all wouldn't help you get a job anywhere else in the industry.

Around that time, my local plant, the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station ("SONGS"), with two operating reactors (one of which is being retrofitted with new steam generators (SGs) at this moment), was at the bottom of the list of "well run" plants in America.

We were, as always, assured things would get better, but instead, they had an explosion and fire in the turbine room which caused the turbine to lose lubricating oil and come to a screeching halt. The turbine shaft, almost as long as a football field and more than a foot in diameter, was bent, and had to be shipped to Japan for repairs that took many months.

Today, San Onofre is once again at the absolute bottom of the heap of "well-run" nuclear facilities. There are problems with worker honesty, integrity, and morale.

A few years ago, information started to come out about how bad things really are at SONGS: Faked fire inspections. Skipped / failed backup generator tests. Tritium leaks. Refusal to provide activists with factual and timely reports. Refusal to do new earthquake studies (even after the Northridge quake), refusal to do new tsunami studies (even after Banda Ache), refusal to do local community cancer cluster studies, worker cancer studies...

The operators of the plant also let the old Steam Generators crack and leak. They'd plug them up in one place, and they'd leak somewhere else. From about the third year of operation, the SGs have been leaking.

San Onofre is a pressurized water reactor (PWR). When the SGs leak, water and chemicals in the highly radioactive primary coolant loop spurt into the secondary coolant loop. When they have to shut down the reactor, such as to replace the fuel (about every eighteen months), they plug up any leaky SG tubes.

The diluted secondary coolant liquid is further diluted and dispersed into the environment. It's perfectly legal, because billions of gallons are run through the tertiary (third) loop each day, and dribbling out the crud can easily be accomplished at levels that remain below regulatory standards. If that weren't so, the regulators would have relaxed the standards even more!

There are thousands of tubes in each SG, and eventually, SONGS had to plug up so many that they decided that it was becoming uneconomical.

All they needed was a license to operate for another 20 years (for 60 years total) and then replacing the steam generators became economical from the utility's point of view.

The utility's point of view doesn't count the costs of cancers, or meltdowns, or large fuel leaks or fires, or terrorism, or war, or the unknown costs of used reactor core disposal.

Renewable energy is ready to provide all the electricity needed for society. We have barely tapped the energy provided each day by the sun, the moon, and the earth's own internal heat. All these and many more energy sources are cleaner than nuclear energy, and conservation alone can allow for EVERY nuclear power plant to be shut down, at no cost to society whatsoever. We don't need dirty energy. We don't need nuclear power.

Barack Obama is about to address a nation whose greatest potential liability is its Disneyesque illusion of atomic power.

Despite the nation's huge debts and fears of foreign terror, America's 104 licensed reactors are the most dangerous threat to our future. After a half-century of operations, the industry still cannot get more than $11 billion in private insurance against possible accidents whose human and property damage could easily run from mere trillions to the simply incalculable.

In the face of terror or error, earthquake or tidal wave and more, every tick of the atomic clock marks a moment in which a single glitch at a single reactor could forever bankrupt the nation.

Escalating decay at clunkers like Vermont Yankee, New York's Indian Point and so many others define our worst untold crisis.

Yet Obama may ask Congress to bilk taxpayers to build still more.

In the 1950s a cartoon called "Our Friend the Atom" portrayed atomic energy as a "too cheap to meter" savior with no apparent problems. Our very houses would be built with uranium whose glow would provide heat and light on the spot. Atomic airplanes would soar through the sky. Hiroshima-sized "devices" would dig our canals and divert our rivers.

Radioactive waste, lethal emissions, ecological dysfunction, soaring costs, human error, the threat of terror---none had a role in the carefully sanitized Hollywood myth of nukespeak non-realities.

Today the fantasy has been deepened. Nuke waste is "stored energy." Three Mile Island was a "success story" where "nobody died." Chernobyl "killed 31 people." Reactors are an economic disaster because of "over-regulation."

No matter that all the above are cartoonish falsehoods. The industry's apparently endless cash still pays for such happy-faced illusions of a technology that has spawned some 450 potential Chernobyls worldwide. Hyped to the hilt, showcase projects in Finland, France and elsewhere are melting amidst interminable delays and astronomical cost overruns. Proposed new US reactors have doubled and tripled in projected price well before the first shovel is turned.

Meanwhile, an energy industry that has disputed climate science for decades now sells its atomic product as the "ultimate cure."

Its backers have demanded---and got---exemption from liability for the full destruction that could be done by future melt-downs or explosions.

And they now want untold billions in loan guarantees. Since 2007 a highly effective grassroots movement has kept the fund at $18.5 billion. With estimates for a single reactor now soaring to $10 billion and more, the industry demands $50 billion, $100 billion, whatever.

Rub the genie's bottle and you might get a firm number. Wish upon a star and you might hear what just one melt-down could actually cost.

In 2010 Obama granted the first $8.33 billion in loan guarantees for a two-reactor project in Georgia. Its price is already soaring. Electric rates there and in any other state that goes nuclear are destined for the twilight zone.

Obama needs to tell it straight---only a total commitment to renewables and efficiency will get this country back on track. The Disneyesque illusion of a "safe, clean, cheap" nuclear industry is a veritable herd of oxymorons.

A powerful, effective national grassroots movement has kept more billions from being dumped into this bottomless pit of bound-to-lose guarantees. We can write Obama asking him to keep the atomic error out of Tuesday's speech. But whatever Obama says, we must win again in 2011. Disneyesque illusions aside, atomic power is about to be transcended by green technologies that are cleaner, cheaper, safer and essential to our real survival.

We have learned that President Obama's State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 25, may include a call for Congress to enact a "Clean Energy Standard" that would support new nuclear reactors and "clean" coal plants.

However, we're told a final decision has not been made by the White House and the issue is still the subject of debate within the Administration.

Your actions now can make a huge difference. Please send a message to President Obama below and tell him that we know nuclear power and coal will never be clean and have no place in a "Clean Energy Standard."

Then please ask your friends and colleagues to send in letters too. You can also easily share this page on Facebook, Twitter and other networking sites (just look for the logos on the upper right).

Every nuclear facility releases toxic radiation on a daily basis, creates lethal radioactive waste and presents constant threat of meltdown--how is that clean? And even if carbon from coal plants could be captured (which is by no means clear), coal still brings us poisonous mercury, toxic ash and mountain top removal.

The Obama Administration--and Congress--must understand that while carbon emissions must be slashed, replacing them with other pollutants is no answer. And, of course, if we're really serious about slashing carbon emissions, then we need to move more quickly to renewables anyway, which release two to six times less carbon per kilowatt of electricity than nuclear power.

To our international friends: Our President may listen to you as well, so we encourage you to send a letter too!

Dear President Obama,

I have learned that you are considering endorsement of a "Clean Energy Standard"--that includes nuclear power and "clean" coal--in your State of the Union address next week.

This would be a terrible mistake.

There is nothing clean about nuclear power. Every nuclear facility releases toxic radiation into our air and water on a routine basis. Nuclear reactors generate very long-lived lethal radioactive waste that we still do not know how to store for the thousands of years necessary before the waste becomes less radioactive, besides each of our current 104 expensive unsafe reactors posing a threat to be the next Chernobyl - where not 31 but nearly a million people now have died premature deaths thanks to the steam explosion and 10 day graphite fire releasing radiation that was swept around the world by nature's winds.

"Clean" coal is an oxymoron. Even if its carbon could be captured, which is by no means clear, burning coal still releases mercury, generates toxic coal ash, and entails destructive mountain top removal.

Carbon is not the only pollutant we must be concerned about and low carbon does not signify "clean." And nuclear power is far less effective than renewable energy, energy efficiency and 21st century technologies like smart grids and distributed generation at reducing carbon emissions. Indeed, carbon emissions associated with the nuclear fuel chain are 2 to 6 times higher per kw of electricity produced than solar and wind power.

I understand you have not yet made a final decision on this critical issue. As a first step, please do not endorse a "Clean Energy Standard" that includes nuclear power and coal in your State of the Union Address. Then, please take the time to examine this issue more carefully. I am confident you will find that nuclear power and coal do not deserve the support of your Administration.

Things are, once again, worse than ever at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station...

Dear Readers,

It always breaks my heart when I hear nuclear workers say they wouldn't be doing it if they thought they were putting their children at risk. These same workers take their children to McDonald's. No risk there, huh? A disproportionate number of them smoke tobacco, and inevitably, their children become smokers more frequently, too. They likewise ignore the dangers from CT scans, x-rays, sunlight and tritium, and they, and their children, get cancer and die, just like the rest of us. Death leaves no voter behind. Even if they "wise up" as they whither and die, it does society no good. Their voting days are done. Today, they might be on the local school board, stopping opinions they don't agree with, and a long-time employee of the nuclear power plant. But tomorrow perhaps, they'll feel a sudden pain that won't stop, or they'll cough up blood, or -- like me -- they'll piss blood, and then their life changes.... but all too often, it's too late by then.

And they don't know if it was the cigarettes or the hamburgers or the x-rays or the CT scans or the sun or their job or something else, but it doesn't really matter, it's over. And if they DO survive, a lot of times, radiation is given in ample quantities before, during, and after treatment, and it's hard to complain about getting too much radiation when the doctor's telling you he thinks he sees a lump... Radiation to find the cancer. Radiation to cure it. Radiation to be sure it remains gone. Radiation to prevent its recurrence. Radiation to keep the hospital's liability down.

The main key to cancer survivability is early detection followed by timely and skilled medical care. No infections, no tools left inside the body, all the holes sewed up nicely. No matter how good it gets, it's not nearly as fun as not getting cancer in the first place.

Many, if not most, cancers are the result of a series of changes in the DNA structure. Although the final initiating event will likely be one random change to the DNA of one cell in the body, out of 10s of trillions of cells, frequently many cells are in the "pre-cancerous" stage by then, which makes "curing" cancer very difficult indeed.

On Tuesday, December 14th, 2010, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a Special Hearing on San Onofre's ongoing problems with worker honesty, integrity, and related morale issues. The dangers to children from environmental radiation were not discussed, although they should have been. Scores of San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station workers showed up at the hearing, wearing "SONGS" dress shirts, polo shirts, jackets, patches, name tags, and/or beepers. The CEO of Edison International (the parent company of Southern California Edison (SCE), which operates the facility (with a lot of sub-contractors such as Bechtel and The Shaw Group)), had flown in, and he sat in the front row along with several other Edison corporate celebrities and NRC mucky-mucks, as well as a couple of recently-retired, 25-year SONGS veterans who are now whistleblowers.

Facing the audience were four SCE executives at one table -- the top one yet another new guy -- and four NRC inspectors at another table. At its peak, there were about 150 people in the room.

During the "formal" part of the meeting, we were told that all the important "metrics" show improvement, and nothing unsafe is happening at the plant. The NRC feels that they are getting the proper feedback from the utility workers so that they can maintain a "Safety-Conscious Work Environment" ("SCWE") and proper regulatory control. We were told that all the workers now carry a "blue book" which tells them how to behave, and many members of the audience held up their "blue books" to show that they carry them all the time, along with their beepers.

However, when the public comment period began and the whistleblowers started speaking out, a completely different picture emerged. Things are, once again, worse than ever at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

Regarding the steel I-beam that was dropped into the spent fuel pool last month (which I had written about in a previous newsletter), we were told that it "only" weighed about 40 pounds. The NRC assumes that even if the I-beam had fallen vertically it wouldn't have been able to damage a 1,400-pound reactor fuel assembly, considering that the reactor fuel assemblies are designed to withstand a second reactor fuel assembly falling on top of them vertically at "terminal velocity" through water.

We were told that even if a fuel leakage issue was somehow caused by such an accident, or any "foreseeable" accident, the radiation would be contained inside the spent fuel pool building, which is very large and "negatively pressurized."

Of course. in order to have negative pressure, you have to suck air out, at least somewhat, because everything leaks, at least somewhat, and people have to go in and out through doorways, and fuel has to go in and out.

Fans draw the excess air out, but not to worry: Everything goes through a HEPA filter! HEPA filters were designed for the nuclear industry, and the standards are written by the Department of Energy (DOE).

So just because they can't even stop a 40-pound I-beam from falling, there's nothing to worry about, because they'll still achieve a 99.99% containment of any radioactive crud that is released, thanks to the HEPA filters, right?

Well, not quite.

To use the word "HEPA" when you market your filter, you are required to achieve a 99.97% filtration of particles larger than 0.3 microns in diameter. At 99.97% efficiency, 3 out of every 10,000 large particles gets through, which can quickly add up to trillions of large particles "legally" getting through the filter. Most of the particles that are released above 0.3 microns will be right around the 0.3 micron size.

Anything smaller than 0.3 microns isn't required to be stopped at all, and of course, any accident will release a spectrum of particle sizes, and many accidents are likely to have average particle sizes in the 0.1 micron size. So HEPA filters aren't all they're cracked up to be! And industry standards are three times weaker than what you probably would go buy yourself at the store.

As a HEPA filter is used, the average particle size it can stop will get smaller as material cakes around the filter material, while the pressure to push air through the filter increases accordingly. If the caked material reacts chemically with the filter material, it can damage the fibers and greatly reduce the effectiveness of the filter. Radiation would, of course, damage the filter material, no matter what that material is.

A good eye can discern objects down to about 10 microns in size, so what HEPA filters do let through is, conveniently enough, invisible. HEPA filters do not stop ANY noble gases, which don't clump into large particles. AND is it just a coincidence that noble gases that might be released in an accident aren't normally measured, reported, considered, or believed to be any cause for concern? Noble gases are generally considered "harmless" because the body doesn't utilize them in any way. But the body absorbs them "accidentally" all the time, so they are in the body at a fairly constant rate.

HEPA filters also won't stop tritium. A single gram of tritium will undergo about 370 trillion (370,000,000,000,000) decays per second.

Fortunately, when they dropped the steel I-beam, it didn't get jammed beside a fuel assembly, which then got damaged as they tried to remove it... I'm just saying, it COULD have happened... Nothing went wrong THIS time. And the NRC feels they learned something.

Did they learn that since 40-year-old steel hooks fail (that's the probable age of the part) that perhaps the whole rest of the plant is falling apart, embrittling unexpectedly, deteriorating from the salty air, the radiation, the heat, the humidity, father time, and poor maintenance?

No!

Instead, the utility replaced the hook and the NRC made a generic new rule: Lanyards should be used for lifts over the spent fuel pool.

Duh.

Which reminds me of the (true story!) guy who was demonstrating safety procedures for a class of young mountain-climbers. He cut his main rope in order to show how the safety rope will catch you safely.

Only it didn't, and he fell 40 feet to his death.

Lanyards break, too.

At the nuclear power plant, the "Standard Operating Procedure" is that there is no such thing as a warning sign of an upcoming catastrophic failure. There are just "lessons learned." So here we sit, at the brink of disaster, and all we have are "lessons learned"!

And actually, we don't even have THAT!

Why not?

Because one lesson learned at San Onofre over and over again is that the records kept by the employees there are NOT ACCURATE! So whatever lessons COULD be learned will soon be forgotten.

I'm sure there are still a lot of good people left at San Onofre.

Let's guess that 90% of the workforce are decent, honest people. That seems kind of high to me, but if that's the case, then about 200 to 300 people, depending on how many contractors are on the staff at any one time, are dishonest at San Onofre. That leaves a lot of room for fraud and deceit!

But even if 99% are honest (a hopelessly optimistic number, judging by the "human factors" problems they are having at the plant) that would still mean that 20 to 30 people are running around the plant faking things, covering up problems, pretending everything went well when it didn't, not finishing jobs... how many screw-ups does it take to cause a meltdown? Just one.

A year ago I heard about problems with integrity in dry fuel cask fabrication, problems of not performing work to specifications. The whistleblower, a long-time San Onofre employee, was also a former Los Alamos technician and a former Marine sniper as well. Now we're hearing that pressure tests (which I assume should normally follow cask fabrication) are being done improperly too.

How DO you spell "recipe for disaster"? SONGS.
